Farewell Steve :(

Posted September 4th, 2006 by Penny Wise

Well, I had all kinds of things I was going to write in my blog today, but my train of thought was unexpectedly turned upside down with the news of Steve Irwin's death. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Forum, I thought someone had to be joking! I still keep hoping someone's made a mistake. This afternoon was spent consoling three heartbroken little boys - my two and a friend, all of whom had placed Steve at the top of their list of heroes for much of their young lives. Is there a woman in Australia or beyond who doesn't feel desperately for Terri Irwin right now? Like many families, ours has much to thank Steve Irwin for. In Ali we have a little boy who is committed to caring for the environment, devoted to wildlife and obsessed with Australia and all its wonderful creatures. While he will never fulfil his dream now of meeting Steve in person, I am sure that he, along with many other children of his generation will continue their enthusiasm and love for all things 'wild'. I look forward to watching his daughter Bindi grow and continue the legacy of the Crocodile Hunter and I know she will make her Dad proud. I'm not good with sentimental stuff, so in the words of Forrest Gump 'that's all I got to say about that'. Rest in peace Steve.
