206 Biscuits
Posted January 7th, 2012
Today I got all productive and made biscuits. 206 of them, to be exact, using "Lizzie's Big Batch Biscuits" recipe from the Vault. I estimated the total cost at $10.50 or thereabouts. At 5c a biscuit, that equals 10 packets of the cheap Ginger Nuts (costing $1.10 a packet) DH likes. So while I haven't really saved anything, I did manage to use up 1.5kg of flour from the pantry and will keep DH in biscuits for the next two or three months.
This whole month will hopefully turn into a "use up stuff in the pantry" month, if I'm organised about it. Our first baby's due mid-February, so saving as much cash as possible is top of the list. So is stockpiling as many pre-cooked meals as I can, so we can just heat and eat for the first few weeks after the birth. Trouble is, I'm not very good at freezer meals yet - I really need to work on my menu planning so that we're eating tasty, cheap food. Our current modus operandi goes something like this:
Me (around lunchtime): So what would you like for dinner?
DH: I have no idea.
Me: *facepalm*
You know things need to change when remembering to get meat out to defrost is a good day's planning!
On that note, it's time for me to check the pantry for some meal ideas (and work out what on earth we can feed an eight-year-old boy for a week)...
