Make every cake of soap last twice as long

To make a cake of soap last twice as long, simply paint the top or bottom with some PVA wood glue and let dry. Doing this means only one side of the soap dissolves, enabling the cake to last double the time. I paint the top side of the cakes of soap when we bring them home. Sometimes my granddaughter even glues a pretty picture to the side!

Different name, different attitude to saving!

A simple change of tactic can make the world of difference when it comes to getting the family on board with saving! Our family recently did a $21 Challenge. To begin with, I was talking with my daughter, when the children started carrying on about the challenge, (the eldest child in that household in 21!). The other adult in the house said nothing, but his expression said everything. What was I going to do to get them on board? I had a lightbulb moment and told them that I was playing SURVIVOR, with help from my fridge, my freezer and my garden. Did I get any more criticism? No way. What I got was discussions on which family member would be able to survive with what is available at home, and for how long. This discussion went on for a week or more. I heard no more complaints and we spent just $2.99 over a fortnight! Next goal is a $41.00 challenge for a whole month. I just need to set a date, and get my support team going again!

Doing things by thirds

Smaller portions means larger savings, as you'll see in this hint.

After having a little money left over from a gift voucher, I purchased a set of three small loaf tins. (each tin holds 1/3 of a normal cake mix). I made up a chocolate cake mix and baked it in three tins. I kept one cake aside and put two in the freezer as soon as they were cold. This meant the cake lasted three days instead of just one. I remove the bar cake from the freezer each morning and not long after the kids are enjoying their smaller slices of cake, with no complaints.

I have since carried this over to savoury dishes. When I make meatloaf, I put the mixture into one large tin as well as the three smaller tins. We eat the larger meatloaf for dinner and I freeze the other ones for lunches. This is working really well for me and the savings are huge.

Naturally beautiful skin and hair

I am a 39 year old mum with five children. I love to have soft skin, but I'm not keen on all those chemicals in general moisturisers. I like natural skin care creams, but they come with a hefty price tag. Thankfully, my grandmother gave me a perfect, all natural solution.

She suggested I try coconut oil, as she had used it as a skin moisturiser and hair conditioner while she was growing up. I purchased a 400ml jar of organic coconut oil from my local health shop for $10.70. I now use it every evening on my face, and every morning as a body and face moisturiser. I also use it as a lip balm and once a fortnight, I melt 1/4 of a cup and apply to damp hair. I then pop on a shower cap, wrap my hair in a towel and experience a moisturising hair pack that smells divine.

My skin has never looked better and my normally dry, curly hair is now soft and shiny. The jar I purchased six weeks ago is still half full and I estimate I will save $380 a year on moisturisers, hair packs and lip balms. Best of all, it's chemical free.
