Tomato paste doubles as cheap puree

Tomato paste saves me valuable dollars on buying puree! Whenever a recipe calls for tomato puree, I just use a sachet of tomato paste and then add water to it to make it up to whatever quantity of puree is required. It works as well and tastes just as good. I like to buy the Delmaine concentrated tomato paste, which comes in four little tubs of 70gm each. It is so versatile, and compared to tomato paste takes up far less room in the pantry!

A 'glovely' way to stop nail biting

If you're a nail biter and want to stop, get your gloves on and leave them on. Don't knock it until you've tried it! It's impossible to get past a fleecy woollen layer, no matter how hard you try. If you can leave them on long enough, (maybe get the kind with fingertips so you can still use your phone!) the habit is broken and before long, your nails will be strong and long (er). Give it a go!

Homemade cake mix

We all know how convenient it is to grab a packet of cake mix off the supermarket shelf, but you can save a lot of money by making your own. This recipe is really easy to make and you can store it in the fridge for up to three months or for longer in the freezer.

Ingredients:

250g self raising flour
185g caster sugar
2tbsp milk powder, skimmed or full cream
125g butter

Method:

Sift or process all dry ingredients until combined, and then rub in or process the butter.

To make the cake add:

2 eggs
1tsp vanilla essence
1/2 cup water

When these ingredients have been added to the cake mix, beat the whole lot until combined. Bake at 150C - 180C for 30 minutes if making one cake, or 20 minutes for smaller cakes. For variety, add coffee, cocoa or anything else you like. This is as good as shop bought cake mixes and half the price!

One tablespoon only per wash

Slash your washing powder costs by using a tablespoon of washing powder in your machine instead of a scoop. It works just as well! My sister was learning about budgeting and the speaker mentioned that you could get the same wash results by using one flat tablespoon of washing powder as you could if you used a whole scoop. I decided to test this theory and found that even with a full load of washing this proved to be true. I buy a top brand washing powder that costs around $10 per two kilo box and it contains around 148 tablespoons. I used to go through a two kilo box of powder every four to six weeks when I was using a scoop. Generally I do a load of washing every second day, so using one tablespoon per wash, my box of washing powder should now last me nearly 10 months! Just changing this small habit will save me $90 every 10 months on washing powder!
