Art for Self Care

Posted March 24th, 2023

In this world where normal is not normal, where stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, and the physical manifestations of these inner wounds, means we are always looking for ways to help ourselves.

If our cup is overflowing, if we have tonnes of energy and mental space to be able to give to others and ourselves, that is great. However, we often are running on an empty cup, where even giving ourselves five minutes seems beyond us.

I have recently given away Facebook, except to use as a tool for work purposes or targeted groups like arts and crafts when looking for inspiration. Social media makes us constantly compare ourselves and our lives with others, and comparison is the thief of joy.

Seeing a counselor/therapist is great, however, apart from that, being proactive with our mental and physical health is so important. We will never heal if we are bystanders in our own health processes.

One thing which helps me is art.

Over the years I have had to learn that I don't have to be a world class artist, I don't have to produce pieces to enter into art shows, I don't have to particularly good at art, I just have to enjoy art, to do art.

I still struggle with the " I am not any good at art".

However, when I do art, I get lost in it. It does not matter if it is good, bad or ugly, it becomes a meditation where I can let the world drop away and just create. It gives my brain a rest, and soothes my spirit, it grounds me so I can focus on what is important, and let those unimportant things just drop away.

I have recently ventured into the world of water colour, using water colour pencils and water colour paints in a tray (not tubes), and I am loving it.

I have let the superficial, unrealistic world of social media go, for the most part, which has freed up time to be creative. This is not new to me, but habits are habits, and we have many bad ones that rob us of our creativity and self worth.

So here are two pieces of art I did recently, the flowers were done with water colour pencils, and the other with water colour paints.
